Just a few short weeks ago, children from years 5 and 6 took part in an Enterprise workshop, which was led by visitors from an initiative called the ‘IKIC (I know I Can) Big Challenge’. As part of this initiative, they run an enterprise competition, where teams from schools across Barnsley develop their business ideas in an attempt to be shortlisted to a Dragon’s Den style final in April.
During the morning, the children were tasked with working as a team to complete a mobile phone activity, where they were required to make and sell phones to generate a profit. Once they had developed their team working skills, they were then asked to generate a business idea in teams of between 2 and 5. Needless to say, as always they worked fantastically well in their groups, astonishing us with some of their business ideas and ways in which they could develop and sell their products to others. However, we were only able to put forward 5 teams to the next stage – the official competition – so many of the teachers from around school joined the deliberation and we finally decided on the business’ through to the next phase.
The chosen business’ are as follows:
Incredible Edible – Year 5 – Joseph and Cadie
Stress Busters – Year 5 – Sonny, Harri, Sam, Kaitlyn and Lucy
Dreamy Delights – Year 5 – Olivia, Sophie, Ruby and Grace
Terrific Tie-Dye – Year 6 –Alex, Oliver, Jack and Lewis
Smooth Ice – Year 6 – George, Brodie, Rian, Matthew and Kai
The teams have since been working incredibly hard to develop their ideas and make their products during after school club and in their own time. We hope that the Wellgate community will support them in helping their business’ to thrive. Some of the teams are now ready to share their products with you and will be show-casing them at the Wellgate Christmas Fayre. Look out for them at the fayre and enjoy some lovely treats and gifts.
